Apprenticeship

The High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP) provides students from Grades 10 to 12 (16+ years old) with the opportunity to start an apprenticeship in the skilled trades. This program is a great fit for students working in the skilled trades, interested in pursuing a career in the skilled trades, with family members in the skilled trades, or looking to gain elective credits.

BENEFITS OF THE HSAP

• Students can earn up to eight high school credits (110 hours = 1 credit)
• High school apprentices are paid employees of the companies that hire them. Apprenticeship Manitoba requires that employers pay HSAP students minimum wage plus 10 per cent. Employers are eligible to receive financial incentives from the province.
• All hours worked in the HSAP are tracked by both Apprenticeship Manitoba and the school division. Employers submit the student hours to Apprenticeship Manitoba so they can be counted toward Level 1 in the student’s trade.
•  The school division tracks hours separately for the purpose of applying high school credits and tuition incentives for technical training if students pursue the trade after they graduate. For every 220 hours worked as an HSAP apprentice, students will have one level of tuition waived for post-secondary technical training.
• Students gain skills from their work experience that they carry with them for the rest of their lives, regardless of their future career paths.

There are a wide variety of skilled trades that a student can apprentice in, for example construction electrician, hairstylist, plumber, carpenter, esthetician, landscaper, automotive technician, cook, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic, welder, and machinist.
